Objectives

Materials
- Any book of the student's choosing
- Note-taking materials (such as a pen and notebook)
- Discussion questions printed or displayed on a projector or board
- Handout for written reflection
Procedure
- Introduce the class to the concept of choosing a book for themselves. Discuss the benefits of reading for academic and personal growth, and how individual interests can be catered through book selection.
- Ask students to choose a book they would like to read and give them time in class to obtain it.
- Instruct the students to read the book outside of class, and to take notes on key themes, characters, or events that stand out to them.
- On the day of the class, give students discussion questions or divide the class into small groups to facilitate discussion.
- Encourage active participation and critical thinking through response to discussion questions or other prompts.
- Give students a handout for written reflection. This can be in the form of a short essay or paragraph. Request for them to reflect on the book they've read and discuss the aspects they enjoyed or didn't enjoy.
- Conclude the class by reminding the students of the benefits of reading and encourage them to continue pursuing books of interest to them.
Homework
As homework, ask students to read and reflect on another book of their choice. You can either give them a deadline or have them report back to the class in the following class session.
