Welcome to our Economics class on Income and Wealth! In this course, we will explore various concepts, theories and policies related to the distribution of income and wealth in different economies around the world.
Let us start with a fun and interactive activity that will help you understand the concept of income inequality. Please take out a piece of paper and a pen. Draw a line at the centre of your page and write your name above it.
Next, think of a celebrity or a famous person that you admire. Write their name at the top of the page on the left side of the line. Now, think of a person or a profession that represents the lower income bracket. Write their name on the right side of the line.
For example:
Name of celebrity
/
(Middle line)
\
Name of person with lower income
Now, draw a hard line that represents your estimated income level. It can be anywhere between the two lines.
For example:
Name of celebrity
/
(Middle line)
\
Name of person with lower income
|
$$$
Based on your estimated income level, how close or far are you from the celebrity or the person with lower income? Discuss with the person sitting next to you.
In the next part of our lesson, we will explore a case study on the distribution of wealth in countries around the world.
Please read the following article in pairs and be ready to present your findings:
Income inequality: Think globally, act globally
Let's wrap up this class by summarizing the key takeaways from our discussion today. Remember to think about how these concepts and theories apply to your own life and your future career path.
Thank you for your attention, and see you in the next class!
